You will experience reduced handling and uneven tyre wear if your wheels are out of alignment. This is bad because tyre makers include redundancies into their tyres so they will still provide adequate traction when they wear out. If tyre wear is uneven, manufacturers have no means to account for it and can't make their tyres to make up for it.
